Highest number of casualties since 1989

The preliminary figures show that 28 people were fatally injured on Norwegian roads in June, while 1272 people were seriously or slightly injured. This is the highest number of injuries in one month since June 1989.

During the first six months of 2002 there were 4020 road accidents recorded by the police in Norway. These accidents resulted in 5856 injuries. This is an increase of 15.1 per cent or 767 people compared with the same period last year. Among the injured 9.2 per cent were very seriously or seriously injured, while 77.3 per cent were slightly injured. The remaining injuries were unspecified.

The preliminary figures show that one more person was killed in road accidents in June this year than in the same month last year. During the first six months this year 147 people were killed in road accidents. This is eight more than in the same period last year.

Among the 28 people that were killed in road accidents in June there were 15 car drivers, three car passengers, three motor cycle riders, two motor cycle passengers, two pedestrians, one bus passenger and one moped rider.

Highest increase in number of injured in Østfold

From January to June this year 443 people were injured in road accidents in Østfold. This is an increase of 49.2 per cent from the same period last year. Sør-Trøndelag had a corresponding increase of 38.5 per cent, and ended up with 385 people injured in road accidents in this period. In absolute numbers Oslo had the highest number of injuries, with 775 people.

Comparisons against other Nordic countries

During the first five months this year 201 people were fatally injured in road accidents in Sweden, 180 in Denmark and 144 in Finland, according to figures from the Swedish National Road Administration , Statistics Denmark and Statistics Finland . The corresponding figure for Norway was 119.

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police forces. This results in less severe accidents and injuries being under-represented in the figures.
