36 persons killed and 1 039 injured

A total of 731 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in May. 36 persons lost their lives and 1 039 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

This is the highest number of persons killed in May traffic since 1995. The number of accidents is also increasing compared with the ten-year period 1993-2002. Comparative figures for May last year show 24 persons killed and 812 injures on Norwegian roads, while the average for the period 1993-2002 is 27 persons killed and 822 injuries.

Of the 36 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 17 were drivers of automobiles, six were passengers of automobiles, six were drivers of motorcycles, one was a mopedist, one was a cyclist, four were pedestrians and one was classified as other type of road user.

118 killed so far this year

118 persons have lost their lives in Norwegian traffic in the first five months of 2002, the highest number since January-May 1995. In the corresponding period last year 114 persons were killed on Norwegian roads.

Increase in injuries

A total of 4 451 persons have been injured on Norwegian roads so far this year. Comparative figures for the corresponding period last year show 3 796 injuries, while the average for the period 1993-2002 is 3 999 injuries.

Road traffic accidents in Nordic countries

During the first four months of this year 155 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in Sweden, 138 persons were killed in Denmark and 112 persons in Finland. The comparative figure for Norway was 82 casualties. Comparative figures for the first four months of 2001 were 145 persons killed in Swedish traffic, 128 in Danish traffic, 124 in Finish traffic and 88 in Norwegian traffic.

The accident statistics for 2001 that is used for comparative purposes are preliminary figures. Figures for 2001 presented in the tables 1-8 are final.
