The routines for producing the monthly statistics of Road Traffic Accidents have been modified from May 2001. Monthly statistics were previously based on forms from police authorities. Extracting information from the Police's database of accident records now collects this information. The use of this method of data collection may result in more accidents being published in the preliminary monthly statistics and as a result of this fewer corrections will be made at a later stage. These figures will differ only slightly. Statistics on the number of people killed will not be influenced by this modification of data collection.

The accident statistics for 2000, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures published in Road Traffic Accidents Involving Personal Injury, May 2000. The figures for 2000 presented in the tables 1-5 are final.
