The total of 145 fatalities is the lowest since 1950. The average number of fatalities over the period 2003 to 2012 was 222.

Lowest exposure risk among the Nordic countries

In Norway, the number of fatalities per 100 000 inhabitants was 2.9 in 2012, compared to 3.0 in Sweden. Preliminary figures for Denmark and Finland were 3.2 and 4.7 respectively.

More seriously injured

In 2012, 699 persons were seriously injured in road traffic accidents, compared to 679 in 2011. The average for the 10-year period 2003-2012 was 848.

A total of 8 195 persons were injured in road traffic accidents last year; a decrease of 2 per cent compared to 2011. The average over the period 2003 to 2012 was 10 479 injuries per year.

Positive development for drivers and car passengers

Drivers and car passengers make up a large share of persons who are killed in road traffic accidents each year. Eighty-six out of the 145 persons that were killed in road traffic accidents in 2012 were in these two accident groups, corresponding to a share of 59.3 per cent of all fatalities. In 2011, the share was 70.8 per cent. The other accident groups showed a less positive development. The number of persons killed on a motor cycle increased by 4 to 17 in total. Twenty-two pedestrians were killed, 6 more compared to 2011. The number of moped riders and cyclists killed was the same as in 2011; 4 and 12 respectively.

A reduction in fatalities among the youngest

In 2012, 30 persons under 25 years of age were killed in road traffic accidents, compared to 40 in 2011 and 54 in 2010. The decrease was especially large for youths in the age group 18-19 years of age, where the number of fatalities was reduced from 13 to 7. When considering the figures it is important to bear in mind that there are substantial fluctuations over the years at such a detailed level.

No one killed in traffic accidents in Finnmark

In 2012, no one was killed in traffic accidents in Finnmark. Fifteen persons lost their lives in Hordaland and 13 in Rogaland.

105 lost their lives in head-on-collisions and run-off-the-road accidents

A total of 57 persons were killed in head-on-collisions in 2012. Forty-eight persons were killed in run-off-the-road accidents. In total, these two types of accident caused 72.4 per cent of all fatalities in 2012 compared to 78 per cent in 2011.
