Decrease in foreign guest-nights

The number of guest-nights at Norwegian collective accommodation establishments amounted to 5.20 million in July 2002, a decrease of 1 per cent compared with July last year. The domestic demand was roughly unchanged, while the foreign one decreased by almost 3 per cent.

Statistics Norway has changed the presentation of the statistics concerning accommodation establishments. In connection with the publishing of statistics concerning camping and intermediaries of huts, Statistics Norway now presents a complete overview of the commercial accommodation establishments and the demand for those. The statistics include hotels, camping sites, holiday dwellings and hostels that are members of Hostelling International Norway.

Fewer Germans in July

The stays by guests from Germany, which is the largest foreign market, decreased by 7 per cent in July 2002 compared with the corresponding month last year. Germans stayed less in especially hotels and partly camping sites than previously.

The Netherlands represented the second largest market in July. The number of guest nights from the Netherlands increased by 2 per cent compared with July 2001.

The decrease of visitors from Sweden amounted to 9 per cent compared with July last year. The reason is fewer guest nights at hotels, camping sites and hostels that are members of Hostelling International Norway. This development was nearly compensated by more stays at the holiday dwellings.

The popularity of the camping sites shows considerable variations in different seasons. July is the great "camping month" of the year. About 51 per cent of the guest nights in July were at camping sites, 45 per cent at hotels and 3 per cent at holiday dwellings and members of Hostelling International Norway.

On the other hand, just 33 per cent of the entire number of guest nights was at camping sites and 64 per cent were at hotels.

Guest-night by type of establishment. January-July 2002

The number of guest nights at collective accommodation establishments totalled 15.64 million during the first seven months of 2002, about the same as last year. The number of foreign guest-nights remained roughly unchanged. The number of domestic stays increased by almost 1 per cent.

Camping increased

Camping sites had in all 2.68 million guest nights in July, an increase of 0.6 per cent. Norwegian stays increased by 2 per cent, while the foreign ones decreased by nearly 3 per cent.

Even in July this year the number of stays at camping sites amounted to 5.13 million, an increase of 3 per cent. Compared with the corresponding period last year the number of foreign and domestic guest-nights went up by 3 and 1 per cent respectively.

Holiday dwellings down

The number of guest nights at Norwegian holiday dwellings came to 100 000 in July, a decrease of 1 per cent compared with July last year. The decrease in the domestic marked was just partly compensated by an increase in the foreign market.

So far this year the number of guest nights at Norwegian holiday dwellings amounted to 313 000, an increase of above 5 per cent from last year. The number of Norwegian guest nights decreased by 2 per cent while the foreign market increased by 11 per cent. The increase of nights stayed by guests from Denmark and Germany is considerable.
