Increased use of bus and rail

Overall, there was an increase of 6 per cent in public transport from the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011. There was a growth of more than 3 million passengers, for both bus and rail.

Kilometres offered increased by 2.7 per cent and led to an even stronger growth in the number of passengers by bus and rail, compared to the second quarter of 2010. Public transport by bus flattened out after the record high of 2009. The number of passengers by bus increased by 5.4 per cent, while passengers by rail increased by 7.9 per cent. Ticket revenues rose as a consequence of the increase in passenger figures, and reached for the first time NOK 2,5 billion.

Reduction in passengers by boat

Despite a growth of 8.1 per cent in kilometres offered, there was a reduction of 7.4 per cent in passengers by boat. Ticket revenues decreased by 8.6 per cent from the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011.

Difficult to compare over time

Both the boat and the bus sector have faced large changes in structure, technology and types of contracts during recent years. These changes make it difficult to compare numbers over time.

The figures are preliminary and might be adjusted for comparisons to the new annual survey for 2011.
