Continued growth in public transport

The number of passengers using public transport showed an increase of 3.3 per cent in 2013 compared to 2012. More than half of the growth was on rails, but the percentual increase was strongest for boats.

Out of a total of 561 million fares, 340 million were by bus. This corresponds to 61 per cent. Passenger transport on rails continued to see the largest increase, both in per cent and number of passengers . In total, 211 million passengers travelled on rails in 2013, and of these about 67 million travelled by train.

Increase by bus in city areas

Most of the recent growth in the use of bus transport has been in the three largest cities. Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim increased passenger numbers by 6 million, from a total increase of 7.6 million passengers by bus from 2012 to 2013. Regional routes also saw a slight passenger growth of almost 1 million, while express busses saw passenger numbers drop by 6.8 per cent to less than 9 million.

Increased ticket revenues

Ticket revenues increased by 7.8 per cent from 2012 to 2013, which was significantly stronger than the passenger growth. Revenues for boat transport increased by 14.1 per cent, while revenues from passengers on railroads increased by 19.5 per cent. Total ticket revenues were almost NOK 11 billion.

Increased capacity on rails

The total of vehicle, boat, and train kilometres was almost unchanged from 2012 to 2013. Greater activity on rails led to an increase of more than 1 billion seat kilometres. City buses with fewer seats and more standing places gave a small reduction of -0.4 per cent in seat kilometres offered by Norwegian buses.
