City buses gain ground

Passengers on city buses made 20 million more rides in 2012 compared to 2011, representing an increase of 9.4 per cent. Other modes of public transportation saw an increase as well, but not nearly at the same rate. In total the number of public transport passengers rose by 2.7 per cent.

Most of the growth in public transport was in the urban areas of Norway’s major cities; Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.

Public transport on rails has been the locomotive of passenger growth the last years, but from 2011 to 2012 the number of passengers only increased by 1.9 per cent.

Express buses take back market shares

1 million more passengers by express buses take back market shares lost in the last couple of years. At the same time, non-urban buses suffer largely and loose 9 million passengers from 2011 to 2012. This represents a 8.9 per cent decline.

Identical transport performance by bus and rails

Average fares by bus were reduced to 11.2 kilometres from 2011 to 2012. On rails the average travel rose to 19.0 kilometres. In total bus and rails saw identical transport performance at 3,788.5 million passenger kilometres.

Shorter fares by boat

The average boat passenger travelled close to 4 kilometres less in 2012 compared to 2011 but these fares are still the longest among our modes of public transportation.

NOK 7.5 billion in subsidies

Counties bought passenger transport for NOK 7.5 billion in 2012, while passengers spent NOK 9.8 billion on tickets. Subsidies of bus routes increased by NOK 431 million, or 8.2 per cent, from 2011 to 2012.

Uncertain time seriesOpen and readClose

Both the bus and boat sectors have been subjected to major structural, contractual and technological changes in recent years. The postponement of tenders, gross contracts and electronic ticketing have all contributed to greater uncertainty in the changes in the supply and demand for public transport.
