Figure 1. Goods loaded and unloaded per quarter in international transport

There was a decrease of 0.7 million tonnes, or 1.6 per cent in total cargo in the 4th quarter of 2016 compared to the 4th quarter of 2015. Liquid bulk totalled 21.9 million tonnes, which was a fall of 0.3 million tonnes, or 1.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2015. Although less was transported on a national scale, the port of Bergen nearly doubled the transport of crude oil, to 8.6 million tonnes.

Stable dry bulk

A total of 17.6 million tonnes of dry bulk were transported in the 4th quarter of 2016. This was a decrease of 0.8 per cent compared to the 4th quarter of 2015. At the country's largest dry bulk harbour, Grenland (Porsgrunn), dry bulk had a decrease of 8.4 per cent to 1.7 million tonnes. The transport from Narvik port had an increase of 2.6 per cent to 5 million tonnes, and this was mainly for ore.

Decrease in volume of container goods

A total of 1.5 million tonnes of cargo were transported in containers in the 4th quarter of 2016. This was an increase of 1.4 per cent compared to the 4th quarter of 2015. In total, 188 000 containers were transported with and without cargo, which is an increase of almost 5 000 from the same period in 2015.

More travellers with the international ferries

There was an increase of 50 000 passengers, or 4.3 per cent, and 15 000 cars, motorcycles and accompanying trailers/caravans in the 4th quarter of 2016. Sandefjord port had the largest increase, with 45 000 passengers.

Fewer travellers with the Coastal Express Liner

During the 4th quarter of 2016, 125 600 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner, which is a decrease of 0.7 per cent compared to the 4th quarter of 2015. A total of almost 378 700 passengers travelled with this route in 2016; a decrease of 4 000 compared with 2015.

Starting from the 1st quarter of 2015, the cargo type Roll-on Roll-off (road goods vehicles and accompanying trailers) is not included in the statistics. This change has little effect on the comparability between previous quarters at an aggregated level, since only a few ports were affected.

On a more detailed level, the effects on comparability are somewhat greater.
