More dry bulk and less liquid bulk

Dry bulk to and from Norwegian ports increased by 11 per cent from the 4th quarter of 2009 to the 4th quarter of 2010. Liquid bulk had a decrease of 7 per cent in the same period. The total increase in cargo was 0.6 per cent.

In the 4th quarter 2010 the transport of dry bulk increased by 1.5 million tonnes to 15.3 million tonnes. A total of 20.3 million tonnes of liquid bulk was transported in the 4th quarter of 2010; a decrease of 1.5 million tonnes. Grenland and Bergen ports were the largest dry and liquid ports respectively. The transport of liquid bulk, including Hammerfest port, was 21.7 million tonnes in the 4th quarter of 2010.

Of the total cargo volume of 42.6 million tonnes in the 4th quarter of 2010, 28 million tonnes or 66 per cent was sent to or from foreign ports. In the 4th quarter of 2009 the share was 64 per cent.

Hammerfest port - newcomer in 2010

As from the 1st quarter of 2010, Hammerfest port is included in the port statistics. Ninety-eight per cent of the transport in Hammerfest port was liquid bulk. Figures for Hammerfest port are not included in comparisons with earlier periods.

Less container transport

During the 4th quarter of 2010, 1.2 million tonnes of cargo were transported in TEU containers; a decrease of 18 600 tonnes compared with the 4th quarter of 2009. The number of TEU containers with cargo was about the same in relation to the corresponding period in 2009.

More travellers with international ferries

In the 4th quarter of 2010, 1.1 million passengers travelled to and from Norwegian ports with international ferries. The traffic increased by 23 300 passengers, or 2.1 per cent.

More passengers with the Coastal Express Liner

A total of 70 600 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner during the 4th quarter of 2010.

This was 3 800, or 5.7 per cent more than the 4th quarter in 2009. There were 4 400 more travellers in October and November compared with the same period in 2009. In 2010, 449 400 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner. This was an increase of 9.1 per cent from 2009.

Liquid bulk and dry bulk

Liquid bulk includes oil and other liquid products.

Dry bulk includes grains/cereals, coal, iron ore and other non-liquid products.
