Light increase of goods in the ports

During the 1s t quarter of 2010, 39.3 million tonnes of goods were transported to and from the largest ports in Norway; an increase of 1.5 million tonnes or 3.9 per cent compared to the 1s t quarter of 2009.

Hammerfest port

From the 1s t quarter of 2010, Hammerfest port is included in the port statistics. A total of 98 per cent of the transport in Hammerfest port was liquid bulk. Hammerfest port is not included in the calculations by comparison between earlier periods.

Increase in transport of dry bulk

The transport of dry bulk increased by 27.8 per cent to 12.0 million tonnes from the 1s t quarter of 2010 to the same quarter in 2009. Narvik port was the largest dry bulk port during the 1s t quarter of 2010, with 4.2 million tonnes of dry bulk compared to 1.8 million tonnes in the same period in 2009.

Less transport of liquid bulk

A total of 21.1 million tonnes of liquid bulk was transported in the 1s t quarter of 2010, which represents a decrease of 5.8 per cent compared to the 1s t quarter of 2009. Bergen port had the largest volume of liquid bulk; 11.8 million tonnes. This was 13.2 per cent less compared with the 1s t quarter of 2009.

Total transport of liquid bulk including Hammerfest port was 22.5 million tonnes in the 1s t quarter of 2010.

More container transport

During the 1s t quarter of 2010 there was also an increase in the total volume and number of TEU containers compared to the same period in 2009. A total of 115 000 TEU containers with 1.2 million tonnes of cargo were transported in the 1s t quarter of 2010; an increase of 17.9 and 14.6 per cent respectively.

Fewer travellers with international ferries

During the 1s t quarter of 2010, 1 036 000 passengers travelled with the international ferries, 10 000 passengers less than the same quarter in 2009. Most travellers went from/to Sandefjord and Oslo.

Annual statistics: fewer goods across Norwegian ports in 2009

During 2009, a total of 182.6 million tonnes of goods were handled at Norwegian ports. This was 11.2 million tonnes or 5.8 per cent more compared with 2008. Smaller municipal ports had 23.4 cargoes in 2009.

More passengers with the Coastal Express Liner

A total of 77 000 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner in the 1s t quarter of 2010. This was 14 000 or 22 per cent more compared to the 1s t quarter of 2009.

Liquid bulk and dry bulk

Liquid bulk includes oil and other liquid products.

Dry bulk includes grains/cereals, coal, iron ore and other non liquid products.
