Less activity in Norwegian ports

From the 2nd quarter of 2008 to the 2nd quarter of 2009, the transport of goods to and from the largest Norwegian ports fell 5.7 million tonnes, or 13 per cent. Transport of dry bulk decreased, while liquid bulk transport increased.

A total of 38.4 million tonnes of goods were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2009, of which 23.9 million tonnes, 62 per cent, was international transport. Liquid bulk represents the largest type of cargo with 21.7 million tonnes, 56 per cent. Bergen and Omland Port Authority and Tønsberg Port Authority increased their handling of liquid bulk by 675 000 and 411 000 tonnes respectively. Total amount of liquid bulk handled in Norwegian ports increased by 56 500 tonnes from the 2nd quarter of 2008 to the 2nd quarter of 2009.

Transport of dry bulk down

A total of 11.3 million tonnes of dry bulk were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2009. This was 3.7 million tonnes, or 25 per cent, less than the same period in 2008. Dry bulk represents the second largest type of cargo in the second quarter of 2009 and was 29 per cent of all transported goods. Narvik Port was the largest port within dry bulk, and transport here fell by 1 million tonnes, or 29 per cent.

Less containers

A total of 141 500 TEU containers were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2009. This was 24 800, 15 per cent, less than the 2nd quarter of 2008. Goods in TEU containers totalled 1.1 million tonnes; a decrease of 17 per cent. Oslo was the largest container port with 31 800 containers, and had 3 500 fewer TEU containers in the 2nd quarter of 2009 than the corresponding quarter of 2008.

Less traffic with the Coastal Express Liner

The Coastal Express Liner had a decrease of 16 000 passengers in the 2nd quarter of 2009 compared with the 2nd quarter of 2008. The month of May had the largest decrease, with 9 500 less passengers. A total of 130 000 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner in the 2nd quarter of 2009.

Liquid bulk includes oil and other liquid products.

Dry bulk includes grains/cereals, coal, iron ore and other non liquid products.
