Increasing container traffic in the 2nd quarter

166 000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) containers were transported between Norwegian ports in the 2nd quarter of 2008, an increase of 6 per cent compared with the same quarter in 2007.

Of the 166 000 TEU containers transported in the 2nd quarter 2008, 119 000 units contained cargo, and 47 000 were without cargo. The total amount of goods in TEU containers were 1.2 million tonnes, an increase of 10.7 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year. Oslo and Larvik were the largest container ports, with 40 per cent of total containers and 41 per cent of total goods in containers.

Overall decrease in transported cargo

The total amount of goods in the second quarter of 2008 was 44.2 million tonnes. This is a decrease of 1.2 million tonnes, or 2.7 per cent compared with the 2nd quarter 2007. Liquid bulk constituted almost half of the total goods in the 2nd quarter 2008. The largest ports with liquid bulk were Bergen, Karmsund and Tønsberg. 78 per cent of all liquid bulk was transported via these ports.

Increase in dry bulk

The transport of dry bulk was 15 million tonnes in 2nd quarter 2008, an increase of 2.9 per cent compared with the same quarter 2007. Dry bulk constituted 34 per cent of the total goods in the second quarter of 2008. The largest ports with dry bulk were Narvik and Grenland.

Almost unchanged number of calls

There were 18 850 port calls in the largest Norwegians ports. General cargo ship had an increase of 250 calls, while calls of other ships were unchanged.

Increase in passengers traffic on Coastal Express Liner

146 311 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner during the 2 quarter 2008, an increase of0.5 per cent from the 2nd quarter last year. The northbound route had 74 200 travellers, while the southbound route had 72 000 travellers. Compared with the same period last year, there were4 200 more passengers in May and 3 400 fewer passengers in June. The number of passengers in April was unchanged.
