More cargo over Norwegian ports

The total amount of cargo carried in the second quarter 2006 was 46.5 million tons. This is an increase of 3.9 per cent compared with the same quarter last year. 35 per cent of the total amount of cargo was transported between Norwegian ports.

Respectively, wet bulk and dry bulk constitute 55 per cent and 30 per cent of the total amount of cargo carried. 1 million tons were transported in TEU-containers (twenty foot equivalent unit) in the second quarter 2006, a decrease of 3.3 per cent from the previous year. 144 579 TEU-containers were handled in the same period last year.

More port calls

Port calls went up by 5 per cent in the second quarter of 2006 compared with the same quarter last year. General cargo ships constituted 46 per cent of this.

Less ferry transport

In the second quarter of 2006, 1.5 million passengers were carried on the ferry services to and from Norway. This is approximately 100 000 less than in the same period 2005. The ports of Oslo and Kristiansand accounted for 68 per cent of all passengers traveling abroad.

Coastal Express Liner

159 242 passengers traveled by the Norwegian Coastal Liner in the second quarter 2006. This is an increase of 7.2 per cent compared with the second quarter 2005. The numbers of passengers traveling southbound were 77 158, while82 084 traveled on northbound route.
