Increase in container traffic

In the first three months of 2006 container traffic increased by 15 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. More than a million passengers traveled between Norway and foreign countries by ferry in the same quarter.

Measured in TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) 149 741 containers were transported over Norwegian ports in the 1s t quarter. This is an increase of 15 per cent from the previous year. 106 914 of these were containers with cargo.

The total amount of cargo carried in the 1s t quarter of 2006 was 45.5 million tonnes. Compared with the same quarter in 2005 this was an increase of 3.3 per cent. 14.8 million tonnes of cargo were transported between Norwegians ports. Wet bulk constitute 57 per cent of the total amount of cargo transported.

Increase in international traffic

Port calls went up by 1 per cent in 1s t quarter in 2006 compared with the same quarter last year. Ships registered outside Norway constitute 38 per cent of total port calls in Norway, the same as in the 1s t quarter 2005In the 1s t quarter 2006, 1.2 millions passengers were carried on the ferry services to and from Norway. This is a decrease of 4.6 per cent from the same quarter previous year. Ferries in international traffic saw an increase in port calls by 9 per cent compared with same quarter in 2005.

Less passengers on the Coastal Express Liner

75 909 passengers traveled by the Norwegian Coastal Liner in the 1s t quarter 2006, a decrease of 3 per cent compared with 1s t quarter 2005. The numbers of passengers traveling southbound were 35 716 and 40 193 passengers traveled on northbound route.

Yearly statistics 2005

201 million tonnes cargo were transported through Norwegian ports in 2005, an increase by 1.6 per cent compared to 2004. Wet bulk constitute 53 per cent of the total amount of cargo, about the same as in 2004.
