Decline in cargo handled by Norwegian ports

In the first quarter of 2005, Norwegian ports handled 43.9 million tonnes of cargo, a decrease of 1.7 per cent compared with same period last year. 30 per cent of the cargo was transported between Norwegian ports.

Ships registered in Norwegian ship registers transported 15 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of 2005. This is a decrease of 6 per cent compared with the same period last year. Ships registered in foreign ship registers transported 29 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter, more or less on level with the first quarter last year.

1.2 million passengers were carried on ferry services between Norway and other countries in the first quarter of 2005. This is an increase from 1.1 million passengers since the same quarter in 2004.

130 590 containers measured in TEU 142 were transported in the first quarter.

Annual statistics 2004

198 million tonnes of cargo were handled by Norwegian ports in 2004. Large public ports with a total cargo of more than 1 million tonnes handled 165 million tonnes of cargo. Smaller public ports handled 9.4 million tonnes of cargo, and private ports handled 23 millions tonnes.
