Increase in container traffic

The total amount of goods transported domestically and internationally in Q3 2003 came to 39.8 million tonnes. This is an increase of 1.6 per cent from the previous year. The number of TEU containers with cargo handled in Q3 2003 increased by 10.6 per cent.

In the third quarter of 2003 the amount of goods transported in containers amounted to 945 526 tonnes. In this period 30 826 containers with cargo were transported through Oslo port. Second to Oslo was Flora port, with 7 669 containers handled, and Borg port with 7 506 containers. Compared with the third quarter of 2002 this was an increase of 12 per cent for Oslo, a 21 per cent fall for Flora and an eight per cent rise for Borg port.

The amount of goods carried in the third quarter of 2003 was 1.6 per cent higher than in the same period the previous year. Corresponding changes for the second quarter was an increase of 2.4 per cent and for the first quarter a decrease of 9.7 per cent.

International traffic accounted for 64 per cent of the total amount of goods carried in the third quarter of 2003. This is four percentage points lower than in the same period the previous year.

Oslo

The total amount of goods transported through Oslo port in the third quarter was four per cent higher than in the same quarter of 2002. The corresponding change for the second quarter was a seven per cent decline, and for the first quarter a two per cent rise.

Ferry transport

In the third quarter of 2003, more than two million passengers were carried on the ferry services to and from Norway. Oslo, Kristiansand and Sandefjord ports accounted for 85 per cent of these passengers. 392 000 cars and almost 35 000 goods vehicles were carried on these ferries.

Statistics for private ports (greater than 1 million tonnes) will be published in the yearly statistics.
