23 million tonnes of cargo over "small" ports

In 2002, almost 200 million tonnes of cargo were shipped over all Norwegian traffic ports. Of this, 23 million tonnes were shipped over ports not covered by the quarterly maritime transport statistics.

Yearly statistics 2002

In 2002, 23 million tonnes of cargo were shipped over public and private ports with a total cargo of less than 1 million tonnes. The statistics comprises of 42 public ports and 24 private enterprises. Over half of the cargo is transported by private enterprises.

Dry bulk constitutes the largest type of cargo with 14 million tonnes. Wet bulk and other general cargo each constitutes 4 million tonnes of cargo. For dry bulk there was a relative even balance of inwards and outwards flow of cargo. For wet bulk the outwards flow of cargo were three times as large as the inwards flow. With exception of containers and roro units, an equal amount of cargo was transported to foreign and Norwegian ports.

1s t quarter 2003

For the same ports reported in the 1s t quarter 2002, there's a 12 per cent decrease of cargo from last year. A substantial part is due to transport of crude oil and petroleum products.

Containers

841 000 tonnes of cargo were shipped in 91 432 containers TEU in the 1s t quarter this year (excluded are small containers to/from oil platforms). This gives a mean weight of 9 tonnes per container TEU. 31 059 containers were shipped empty. In Oslo the volume of cargo shipped in containers decreased by 11 per cent from 1s t quarter last year to 1s t quarter this year. As from 2003, we now separate lolo containers from roro containers.
