44. 9 million tonnes of cargo over Norwegian ports

44.9 million tonnes of cargo was transported over Norwegian ports in the 4th quarter last year. Two thirds of this was transported to or from foreign ports. In all 2002 Norwegian ports handled 172.6 million tonnes of cargo.

21.5 million tonnes of crude oil or almost half of all cargo transported in the 4t h quarter was transport of crude oil. Almost 2/3 was transport of crude oil to foreign ports. The port district of Bergen constitutes almost half of all crude oil transport.

Dry bulk

9.5 million tonnes of dry bulk was transported over Norwegian ports in the 4t h quarter last year. The port district of Narvik handled 3 million tonnes of this. The port district of Grenland handled 1.3 million tonnes of dry bulk.

Containers

Norwegian ports handled 133 439 containers measured in TEU (Twenty feet Equivalent Unit) in the 4t h quarter 2002. 28 per cent of the containers were empty. The containers carried 927 030 tonnes of cargo. This gives an average weight of 9.7 tonnes of cargo per container TEU.

172.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2002

The biggest ports handled 172.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2002. 115.7 million tonnes of cargo were transported to or from a foreign port. 84 per cent of the cargo was transported to a foreign port. 56.9 million tonnes of cargo was transported between Norwegian ports, and from the Norwegian continental shelf to a port on the main land. 40.3 million tonnes of this was unloaded with mainly crude oil from the continental shelf.

Containers in 2002

473 901 containers measured in TEU was transported over Norwegian ports in 2002. The containers carried 3.4 million tonnes of cargo, which gives an average weight per container TEU of 10 tonnes.
