Slight change in commercial fleet

The number of vessels in the merchant fleet decreased by nine from 2010 to 2011; a decrease of 1 per cent. Gross tonnage had a decrease of 0.1 million tonnes in the same period.

The merchant fleet, vessels registered in the Norwegian International Ship register (NIS) or the Norwegian Ordinary Ship register (NOR), totalled 1 398 vessels at the end of 2011. Total gross tonnage was 15.6 million tonnes.

Vessels registered in NOR

A total of 891 vessels with a total of 2 million gross tonnes were registered in NOR at the end of 2011. This was an increase from last year of 9 vessels or 1 per cent. Gross tonnage increased by 0.1 million or 4.1 per cent in the same period. Twenty-five tankers and 866 dry bulk vessels were registered, which were 318 000 and 1 677 000 gross tonnes respectively.

Vessels registered in NIS

A total of 507 vessels with a total tonnage of 13.6 million gross tonnes were registered in NIS at the end of the year. This is a decrease of 3.4 per cent of vessels and 1.5 per cent of tonnage from last year. While there was a decrease in tankers and dry cargo vessels in total, there was an increase in the number of offshore vessels, from 85 to 94 vessels. Tonnage for these vessels increased from 342 000 to 421 000 gross tonnes, up 23 per cent from the year before.

Ships not included in the merchant fleet

At the end of 2011 there were 15 500 vessels registered in NIS/NOR shipping registers that are not included in the merchant fleet. The types of vessels lean heavily towards fishing and leisure; 6 158 fishing vessels and 5 794 leisure boats.
