The number of ships in the Norwegian Merchant Fleet owned by Norwegians, went up from 1 104 in 2007 to 1 155 in 2008. At the same time the gross tonnage went up from 10 to 12 million, an increase of 20 per cent. Both number of ships and gross tonnage for foreign owned ships fell.

The number of ships in the Norwegian Merchant Fleet, registered in the Norwegian International Ship register (NIS) and owned by Norwegians, went up from 355 in 2007 to 385 in 2008. At the same time the gross tonnage went up from 7.7 million to 9.7 million, an increase of 27 per cent. For NIS registered ships owned by foreigners the change was opposite. Number of ships went down by 18 and gross tonnage fell by 1.4 million. In total, the number of NIS registered ships increased with 12 ships, while the gross tonnage rose with 695 thousand gross tons.

Growth in the Norwegian Merchant Fleet

Norway’s Merchant Fleet counted 1 347 ships in 2008, 33 more than in 2007. Gross tonnage went up by 3.7 per cent. The number of ships went up both in NIS and in the Norwegian Ordinary Ship register (NOR), with 2.1 and 2.8 per cent respectively. While gross tonnage went up by 4.8 per cent in NIS, it fell by 3.0 per cent in NOR.

More New ships

The 110 NIS registered ships under five years of age in 2008 represented a gross tonnage of 3.8 million. In 2007, and in the same category, 93 ships stood for 3.3 million in gross tonnage. The number of NOR registered ships in the same age class increased correspondingly, with 10 more ships and 80 thousand in additional gross tonnage.

The Merchant Fleet is a sample of all the ships registered in NOR and NIS. Only ships with 100 or more in gross tonnage used for transporting goods or passengers are included. Tables 1 through 5 below describes the Merchant Flee only, while table 6 contains other ships not included in the Merchant Fleet. Data available in StatBank includes all ships.
