Few changes in Norwegian merchant fleet

The number of vessels in Norwegian ship registers remained almost unchanged from 2005 to 2006. Measured in gross tonnage, the Norwegian merchant fleet increased by 5.1 per cent.

741 vessels were registered in the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register (NOR) by the end of 2006, a decrease of 1.2 per cent from the end of 2005. The NOR tonnage was 2.4 million gross tonnes in 2006, the same as in 2005. The number of vessels in the Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) decreased by less than 1 per cent from 2005 to 2006, but the gross tonnage increased by 6 per cent. 38 per cent of the vessels registered in NIS were foreign owned.

Almost 20 per cent of all vessels in Norwegian Ship Registers in 2006 are tankers, of which 40 per cent were oil tankers. 26 per cent of all Norwegian registered ships are 30 years or older. Of all vessels in the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register, 40 per cent are 30 years or older.

Bergen, Oslo and Stavanger are the most frequent home port. 26 per cent of the vessels list Bergen as home port, 13 per cent Oslo and 8 per cent Stavanger.
