Fewer vessels in NIS

The number of vessels in the Norwegian merchant fleet dropped from 1 400 to 1 342 in 2005, a decrease of 4 per cent compared with 2004. The merchant fleet has been reduced every year since 2001.

The fleet in the Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) is steadily decreasing, both measured in number of vessels and tonnage. 59 fewer vessels led to a reduction of 2 million gross tonnes, to 14 million gross tonnes in 2005. This is 12 per cent less than in 2004.

The largest decrease in the NIS tonnage is due to fewer foreign owned vessels. The foreign owned vessels decreased their gross tonnes by 17 per cent. It amounted to 8.5 millions gross tonnes in 2004 and 7.1 millions gross tonnes in 2005.
