Small changes in the merchant fleet

1 659 vessels totalling 22.1 million gross tons are registered in Norwegian ship registers at the end of 1999. This is a decrease of 1.4 and 1.1 per cent respectively compared with figures from 31 December 1998. At that time the number of vessels was 1 682 with a total of 22.3 million gross tonnage.

In the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register (NOR) 954 vessels totalling 3 million gross tonnage where registered. Of these there were 50 tankers totalling 1.9 million gross tonnage and 904 dry cargo vessels with a total of 1.1 million gross tonnage. The passenger vessels constituted the largest part of dry cargo vessels with 404 vessels or 45 per cent.

The merchant fleet registered in the Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) had 705 vessels with a total of 19.1 million gross tonnage, of which 251 vessels totalling 10.3 million gross tonnage were tankers. There were 74 gas tankers, 73 chemical tankers and 104 oil tankers. While the share of tankers constituted 5 per cent in the NOR, the corresponding per cent in the NIS was 35.6. The NIS fleet had 454 dry cargo vessels totalling 8.8 million gross tonnage. Of these 91 were combined vessels, 79 bulk vessels, 10 reefer vessels, 17 passenger vessels and ferries and 21 supply vessels for offshore activity.

Size

900 vessels or 94.3 per cent of the vessels registered in the NOR were smaller than 5 000 gross tonnage. The corresponding numbers for vessels registered in the NIS were 179 and 25.4. There were 225 vessels or 31.9 per cent of vessels in the NIS registered in the interval 20 000-49 999 gross tons. 75 vessels registered in the NIS were in the interval 50 000-99 999 gross tonnage, and 26 vessels of 100 000 gross tonnage and more. Even though the vessels in the largest group represent just 3.7 per cent of all vessels in the NIS, the group makes up 20.7 per cent of the total gross tonnage in the NIS.

Age

27.7 per cent of the gross tonnage registered in the NIS were 20 years or more per 31 December 1999. 16.8 per cent of gross tonnage in the NIS were less than 5 years, and 21.8 per cent of the gross tonnage were between 5 and 9 years.
