Record-high guest nights

Published:

6 million guest nights were registered in July this year. This is the highest number registered in the course of a single month. Record high overnight stays in hotels and an increase in camping accommodation were contributors to this increase.

The accommodation statistics  registered almost 300 000 more guest nights in July this year at accommodation establishments than in July last year. Norwegian guest nights increased by 3.2 per cent while foreign guest nights showed a corresponding 7.1 per cent increase. More overnight stays from USA, Germany and Sweden contributed most to the increase in foreign stays.

The number of guest establishments has risen by 3.5 per cent in hotels and 16 per cent in camping sites, while holiday dwellings saw a 7.8 per cent drop.

Record-high hotel stays

There were 3.4 million guest nights in Norwegian hotels in July, a 6 per cent increase compared to July last year. Both foreign and domestic stays increased, by 5.2 and 7.5 per cent respectively.

July, the traditional holiday month, saw a 7.5 per cent increase in guest nights for holiday purposes. The largest increase was in Oslo and Vestfold compared to July last year.

Increased camping nights

There was also a solid increase in registered guest nights at camping sites in July this year compared to the same month last year. There were 2.7 million guest nights at camping sites, an increase of approximately 100 000. This is the highest number registered for camping sites since 2009.

This increase was caused by more guest nights in campers and camping huts, while guest nights in tents and caravans fell strongly. Within guest nights in campers, it was especially the counties of Sogn og Fjordane and Telemark that contributed most to the increase.
