Increased profitability for computer businesses

The profitability for computer and related activities increased by 12.1 per cent in 2006, to 54 NOK billion. The operating profit margin increased each year from 2001, and was 7.3 per cent in 2006.

The value added in computer business was a total of 28.5 NOK billion in 2006, an increase of 14.1 per cent from 2005. From 2005 to 2006 the operating income rose by NOK 5.8 billion, NOK 470 million more than the increase in operating costs.38 044 persons were employed in 2006, 5.4 per cent more than the previous year. In comparison, personnel costs increased by more than 15 per cent.

Software consultancy and supply increases

844 businesses were involved in software publishing in 2006, and they employed 6 274 persons. On average each employee added value for NOK 782 000, 9 per cent more than in 2005. Turnover was close to NOK 10 billion, an increase of 24 per cent from 2005.

Software consultancy and supply is by far the largest subgroup within Computer and related industries. The businesses had a turnover of more than NOK 40 billion in 2006, 14.4 per cent higher than the previous year. Employment increased by 6.3 per cent, to 29 124 persons from 2005 to 2006. The total value added was NOK 21.3 billion, and the operating margin 7.4 per cent.

Large businesses do well

There were a total of 9 601 businesses within Computer and related activities in 2006. 114 of these had 50 or more employees. They represented 42 per cent of the total employment in the industry, but 49 per cent of the total value added. On average each employee added value for NOK 876 000. In comparison 3 017 employees of the smallest businesses1 added value for an average of NOK 500 000.

Oslo and Akershus dominates

A total of 22 310 persons were employed in businesses localized in the counties of Oslo and Akershus. This equals 59 per cent of the total employment in Computer and related activities. The same businesses are responsible for 64 per cent of the added value and 65 per cent of the turnover.

Employment in Sør-Trøndelag in computer business rose by 6.4 per cent from 2005 to 2006, the added value only 2.7 per cent. In comparison the increase in Rogaland was 7.6 and 16.5 per cent respectively.

Enterprise figures

The structural business statistics for computer and related activities are compiled both on the local KAU level and on the enterprise level. This is due to the fact that enterprises are registered in the industry subclass that comprises the main part of the activity of the enterprise, and therefore may be registered in a different industry than some of the local KAUs. More in About the statistics. Value added on enterprise level increased by 13.1 per cent from 2005-2006 to NOK 28 billion. The enterprises employed 38 107 persons in 2006. This corresponds to the figures for local KAUs.

Revision of industries

In 2007, the enterprises in Statistic Norway’s Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises have been coded in accordance with the new Standard Industrial Classification (SN2007). This has revealed some incorrectly classified enterprises and local KAUs. In such cases, the code according to the current standard (SN2002) has been revised. This does not effect the total figures for computer industries.
