Increased turnover

Enterprises in the "computer and related activities" industry group had a turnover of NOK 44.6 billion in 2003, according to preliminary figures. This is an increase of 1 per cent compared with 2002.

The preliminary figures showed an increase in turnover of NOK 393 million in 2003 compared with the final results for 2002. In the same period, employment in the industry decreased by 4.7 per cent to 37 258. Both turnover and employment were below the 2001 level.

More consultancy enterprises

In spite of falling turnover and reduced employment, the number of enterprises increased in 2003. The 7 505 enterprises within consultancy services had a total turnover of NOK 34.2 billion and employed 30 330 in 2003. Hardware consultancy enterprises had the largest fall in turnover.

Revision of industries

A revision of industries in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises has caused large enterprises to be moved to other industry divisions and affected the figures. As a result, the group "data processing" had a large increase in turnover from 2002 to 2003, but this is largely attributable to a move within the division. Thus it did not have an effect on the total figures for the division "computer and related activities". The group "other computer related activities" showed a large decrease, but this was mainly caused by a transfer to another division due to a merger.

Preliminary figures

The preliminary figures for number of enterprises, turnover and employment are published while the data are still being revised and may therefore deviate somewhat from the final figures published at a later date. While preliminary figures are published on the enterprise level only, final figures are published both on the enterprise level and the local kind-of-activity unit level.

The employment figures are compiled according to definitions in the EU regulation on structural business statistics and are measured as an annual average. People with more than one job are counted as employees in several enterprises. More detailed information about this and other definitions used in the structural business statistics for computer and related activities is available in "About the statistics".
