Less use of ICT by Norwegian enterprises

Norwegian enterprises use ICT less than enterprises in other Nordic countries. Access to the Internet and the use of homepages are more common in the neighbouring countries than in Norway. The volumes of Internet sales are still low in all Nordic countries.

Portion of all enterprises with the Internet. 2000. Per cent.

Portion of all enterprises with access to the Internet. Distributed by employment. 2000. Per cent

This is some of the main results in the report Use of ICT in Nordic enterprises 2000 / 2001 , which is produced by Statistics Norway in cooperation with the national statistical offices in Denmark, Finland and Sweden

Access to the Internet was most common among Finnish and Swedish enterprises. 91 per cent of all Finnish and Swedish enterprises with at least 10 employees had access to the Internet by the end of 2000. In Denmark 87 per cent of all enterprises had Internet connections. Access to the Internet was least common in Norway. 74 per cent of Norwegian enterprises with at least ten employees had access to the Internet by the end of 2000.

The relative number of Internet accesses was highest in the largest enterprises in all the Nordic countries. Among enterprises with at least 50 employees the Internet penetration rate was not much lower in Norway than in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. The difference was larger among enterprises with 10-49 employees. In Norwegian enterprises with 10-49 employees the Internet penetration rate was approximately 15 per cent lower than among corresponding Danish, Finnish and Swedish enterprises.

Portion of all enterprises with homepage. 2000. Per cent

Portion of all enterprises with Internet sales. 2000. Per cent

The distribution of homepages was most frequent in Sweden. 68 per cent of all Swedish enterprises with at least 10 employees had established a homepage by the end of 2000. The portion of all enterprises with homepages was somewhat lower in Denmark and Finland and considerably lower in Norway. Norwegian enterprises used homepages less frequently. Only 48 per cent of all Norwegian enterprises had established a homepage.

The volumes of Internet sales were still small in the Nordic countries. In this context sales via the Internet mean that at least one per cent of the total turnover is received via homepages. Denmark and Sweden had the highest portion of enterprises with turnover from Internet sales. 12 per cent of all enterprises with at least 10 employees in Finland and Sweden received at least one per cent of the total turnover from orders received via homepages in 2000. 10 and 8 per cent of all enterprises in Finland and Norway respectively acquired at least one per cent of their turnover from Internet sales.

In the spring of 2001 Statistics Norway published results that described the use of ICT in Norwegian enterprises in 2000. The publication used another framework than the report Use of ICT in Nordic enterprises 2000 / 2001 and thus the results presented here will be somewhat different.
