A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

The table presents sickness absence among employees, defined as all residents aged 16 to 69 with active employment relationships (either regular or maritime). Employees are linked to a family type classification from the [statistics on families and households](https://www.ssb.no/en/familie
om-statistikken), where the family is the statistical unit. The family type classification has been adapted for use in the sickness absence statistics for employees.  In the statistics on families and households, children (any age) that lives with at least one parent, without children on their own, classified in the same type of family. In order to improve interpretation of sickness absence among parents, 'children' have their own category: 'Single persons without children, living with at least one of their parents'.  Some employees have an unknown type of family and an unknown number of children under 18 years of age. Vi assume these belong to the group 'Single persons without children' and place them there.  Other types of families (no children under the age of 18) includes couples without children, couples and single persons with adult children (youngest child 18 years old and above).
