Tourism consumption exceeded NOK 100 billion

Total tourism consumption was NOK 108 billion in 2008. Norwegian business travellers in particular contributed to the growth in total tourism consumption from 2004 to 2008.

The tourism satellite account is based on the Norwegian national accounts. Here the final results for 2005 and 2006 as well as the preliminary results for 2007 and 2008 are presented.

Norwegian and foreign tourists spent NOK 108 billion in Norway in 2008 according to preliminary figures. In the period 2004 to 2008, the total tourism consumption increased by 30 per cent measured in current prices. The increase in value was strongest at the beginning of that period. Norwegian business travellers in particular contributed to the change, with a value increase of 37 per cent. Their consumption constituted NOK 23 billion in 2008.

Norwegian households spent more than NOK 53 billion on holidays in Norway or on prepaid expenses for holidays abroad last year. This was 30 per cent more than in 2004. By comparison, households spent about 60 per cent more during their travels abroad in 2008 than four years earlier. It is worth noting that the expenses incurred by Norwegian residents during their travels abroad are not included in the calculations of the tourism satellite accounts.

Norwegian households accounted for about half of the total tourism consumption in Norway, and foreign tourists accounted for about 30 per cent.

Production and value added in the tourism industries

Total production in the tourism industries is estimated to be NOK 181 billion in 2008. The production in these industries constituted 4.2 per cent of the total production in Norway. In real terms, the production in the tourism industries has increased by 4 per cent annually from 2004 to 2008.

The hotel and restaurant industry is the largest tourism industry and constitutes about a third of the production. The shares of each industry have not changed notably over the previous ten years.

Total production of tourism products constituted a good NOK 114 billion in 2006. The production of tourism products constituted 3.2 per cent of all Norwegian production and 4.1 per cent of all production in mainland Norway.

The gross domestic product in 2008 is estimated to be NOK 2 538 billion according to preliminary figures. The share of the tourism industries of the gross domestic product was 3.2 per cent, which is approximately the same share as in previous years. Calculated as the share of the gross domestic product of mainland Norway, the tourism industries constituted 4.4 per cent.

Employment in the tourism industries

The tourism industries employed 159 400 people in 2006. This corresponded to 132 000 full-time employee equivalents. The level has barely changed since 1996. The share of full-time employee equivalents compared to all industries has however decreased steadily. It was 6.4 per cent in 2006 compared with 7.3 per cent in 1996.
