Growth in tourism industries and consumption

Preliminary figures from the Norwegian tourism satellite accounts show that the total consumption expenditures by tourists in current prices increased by 20.7 per cent from 1996 to 1999. The strongest growth is estimated for residents' tourism consumption. Tourism consumption by non-residents increased by 10.7 per cent during this period.

The tourism satellite accounts are now updated with final figures for 1997 and preliminary figures for 1998 and 1999. This period show a stable growth in tourism in Norway.

The total tourism consumption in Norway, in current prices, increased by 5.3 per cent from 1998 to 1999. In 1997 and 1998 the annual growth was 6.2 and 7.9 per cent respectively.

Tourism consumption by non-residents increased by 10 per cent from 1996 to 1999. The annual growth rate was about 1.5 per cent from 1996 to 1997. For 1998 and 1999 the annual growth was about 4 per cent.

Declining growth

The total tourism consumption of accommodation and food and beverage services shows a declining growth during this period. The consumption by non-residents experienced the weakest growth rate.

The output in tourism industries at current prices increased by 22.0 per cent from 1996 to 1999. The annual growth amounted to about 7 per cent. The output at constant prices increased by about 10 per cent from 1996 to 1999.The growth rate diminished during this period. The growth rate in hotel and restaurant industries has been weaker from 1998 to 1999 than the other years during this period.

Value added in tourism industries at current prices increased by about 25 per cent from 1996 to 1999. At constant prices the growth rate was 8.5 per cent. The share of the GDP is stable at about 4 per cent during this period.
