Half of the hunters felled game
In the hunting year 2001/02 a total of 820 000 animals of small game and 29 000 roe deer were felled. Grouse accounted for more than 50 per cent of all small game felled. A number of 76 000 hunters had yield this year.
Steady grouse hunting
In average, 500 000 grouses were felled every year in the period 1971/72-2001/02. The yield varies significantly from year to year. Most grouse were felled in the period 1980/81-1988/89 when between 600 000 and 700 000 grouses were felled each year. In the hunting year 2001/02 a total of 482 000 grouses were felled.
Most grouse in northern Norway
In 2001/02, 72 per cent of the grouses were felled in the five northernmost counties, against 77 per cent the previous hunting year. As many as 108 200 grouses were felled in Nordland county and in Nord-Trøndelag county the number was 71 800.
Capercaillie and black grouse
Capercaillie is one of the most popular small game species. The highest number of woodland birds was felled in the hunting year 1988/89 with a total of 63 300 black grouses and 25 900 capercaillies. After 1991/92 the yield has decreased and in the hunting year 2001/02 only 10 500 capercaillies and 27 200 black grouses were felled.
Goose
A total of 10 800-greylag geese were felled, of which 61 per cent in Møre og Romsdal, Sør-Trøndelag and Nordland counties.
Mountain hare and red fox
In the hunting year 1974/75 a number of 67 000 red fox were felled. One year later the yield was reduced to 38 000, and the next years the yield fluctuated from one year to another. During the last two years the yield has been around 17 000 animals.
After the reduction of the red fox stock in the beginning of the eighties, the yield of mountain hare increased considerably. Over 100 000 mountain hares were felled every year in the period 1984/85-1991/92. After 1991/92 the yield has been reduced, and in 2001/02 a number of 28 600 mountain hares were felled.
Beaver
The yield of beaver reached 2 600 animals in the hunting year 2001/02. Most beavers were felled in the counties Hedmark, Telemark, Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder.
Decline for roe deer hunting
The yield of roe deer has varied a lot from one year to another. During the autumn of 1993 a total of 59 600 roe deer were felled. Later, it has been a distinct reduction to 28 900 animals in the autumn of 2001.
