Higher yield in small game hunting
The estimated yield of small game hunting for the 1999/2000 hunting year totalled 954 200 small game, an increase of 33 200 from the previous year. Measured by number, grouse accounted for 58 per cent of all small game felled.
For the hunting year 1999/2000 a total of 551 600 grouse were felled, 39 700 more than the year before. It is nevertheless some distance to the level seen in the 1980s, when the number of grouse felled some years was more than 700 000.
Most grouse in northern Norway
In 1999/2000, 77 per cent of the grouse were felled in the five northernmost counties. Of all the counties, Nord- Trøndelag and Troms had the largest increases in felling numbers from the year before, 20 500 and 14 300 grouse respectively. This was also the second year in a row with a pronounced increase in Nord- Trøndelag. Most counties in southern Norway also saw an increase.
Other small game
Other wild birds felled included 56 000 woodland birds (capercaillie, black grouse, and hazel grouse), 47 200 wood pigeons, and 97 600 corvine birds (ravens, crows, magpie, jays). A total of 59 200 ducks were felled, of which 27 100 were mallards, the same level as in 1998/99. Hare hunting yielded 42 600 animals and fox hunting 17 900 animals, a small increase from the previous hunting year.
Stable for roe deer
The number of roe deer felled during the 1999/2000 hunting year was estimated at 36 900 animals, i.e. somewhat less than the year before. Forty-six per cent of the roe deer were felled in Østfold, Akershus and Agder counties.
