Forestry income increased

In 2008, 25 200 personal forest owners had entrepreneurial income from forestry. The average income from forestry was NOK 36 000; an increase of 6 per cent from 2007.

There are 112 000 personal forest owners with a productive forest area of 25 decares or more in Norway. In 2008, their accumulated entrepreneurial income from forestry was NOK 903 million. In addition, spouses of forest owners had NOK 98 million in income from forestry in the same year. In 2007, the corresponding income was NOK 859 million and NOK 99 million respectively.

Forestry income accounted for 7 per cent of gross income

In 2008, the average gross income of forest owners with entrepreneurial income from forestry was NOK 483 000. Income from forestry accounted for 7 per cent of the gross income, while other entrepreneurial income accounted for 32 per cent. Income from wages and salaries accounted for 41 per cent, and the remainder was made up of pensions and other income.

Highest portion with forest income in Nord-Trøndelag

Forest owners from Hedmark county had the highest average entrepreneurial income from forestry in 2008, at NOK 62 000. However, Nord-Trøndelag county had the highest portion of forest owners with positive entrepreneurial income from forestry, at 43 per cent. In the three northernmost counties, only a marginal share of forest owners had entrepreneurial income from forestry.

Agriculture more important than forestry

About one in three forest properties are combined with an agricultural holding. Forest owners with positive entrepreneurial income from forestry had an agriculture income almost three times as large as the corresponding income from forestry. In 2008, their entrepreneurial income from agriculture was NOK 99 000 on average.

Personal forest owner

When the forest is owned by an individual owner, the owner is a personal forest owner. The majority of forest owners in Norway are personal forest owners. Some properties have several personal owners. In such cases, the statistics refer to one reference person.

Central government, common forests, local government, limited companies, foundations etc.

Tax is imposed on the average entrepreneurial income from forestry during the last five years.
