Increase in sea catch of salmon

The total catch of wild salmon and sea trout in the Norwegian fjords amounted to slightly more than 300 tonnes in 2011. This is 37 tonnes, or 14 per cent, more than in 2010.

After some years with record low catches, the catches of salmon and sea trout increased in almost every county in 2011. The increase was highest in the counties of Vest-Agder, Rogaland and Møre og Romsdal.

The average weight of salmon was 4.3 kg in 2011, compared with 4.2 kg the year before. Eighteen per cent of the salmon caught weighed under 3 kg, 57 per cent between 3-7 kg and 25 per cent over 7 kg.

Decrease of the catch taken in Finnmark

Finnmark is the most important county for sea catches of salmon, with a total catch of 122 tonnes in 2011. This is a decrease of 8 per cent compared with the year before, but still made up 40 per cent of the total catch of salmon in Norway.

The catch of escaped farmed fish halved

In the coastal counties from Rogaland to Troms it is permitted to fish for escaped farmed fish. The time period for this particular fishing is between 5 August and 28 February. The total catch in 2010/2011 was 7.4 tonnes, of which 7.3 tonnes were salmon and 0.2 tonnes were sea trout. This is 7 tonnes, or 49 per cent, less than the previous period. The average weight for salmon was 3.7 kg, and 2.3 kg for sea trout.
