Fewer lynx shot

A total of 92 lynx were shot or died of other causes in the 2010/2011 hunting year. This is 65 fewer than the previous year and the lowest number registered in five years.

In 2012, a total of 118 hunting licences for lynx were issued and 77 were shot. Most lynx (14) were shot in the county of Nord-Trøndelag. In the country as a whole, five lynx were shot as a nuisance, six were killed in traffic and four died of other causes.

More wolverines shot under licence

In total, 112 wolverines were shot or died of other causes; seven more than in the previous hunting year and the highest number since the 1870s. A total of 58 wolverines were shot as a nuisance. In total, 119 permissions to shoot wolverines under licence were issued, and 43 animals were shot.

Fewer bears shot

A total of 16 bears were shot or died of other causes; six more than in the previous hunting year. Twelve were shot as a nuisance, one was shot in self defence and one was killed in traffic. In addition, two bears out of a quota of 19 were shot under licence.

More wolves killed

A total of nine wolves were shot or died of other causes. Three were shot as a nuisance, three were shot under licence, one was killed by traffic, one was felled in self defence and one died of other causes.

Quota hunting

Quota hunting for lynx takes place in February and March. The county governor administers the quota hunting of lynx. Anyone who meets the requirements can hunt lynx in areas where quota hunting is in effect.

Shot under licence

The authorities grant licences to shoot large carnivores in cases when it is necessary to reduce the growth of a carnivore stock in order to avoid harm and loss of livestock.

Shot as a nuisance

The authorities grant permission to shoot single animals of large carnivores killing or causing harm to livestock or domesticated reindeer.
