More large carnivores shot

A total of 157 lynx were reported shot or died of other causes in the 2010/2011 hunting year. This is 10 more than the previous year and the highest number registered since the 1870s.

In 2011, a total of 175 hunting licences for lynx were issued and 136 were shot. With 38 animals, most lynx were shot in the county of Nord-Trøndelag. Four lynx were shot as nuisance, 13 were killed in traffic and four died of other reasons.

More wolverines shot as nuisance

In total, 105 wolverines were shot or died of other causes; 16 more than in the previous hunting year. A total of 58 wolverines were shot as nuisance. The majority of them were shot in the northern part of Norway. In total, 119 permissions to shoot wolverines under licence were issued, and 37 animals were shot.

Fewer bears shot

A total of 10 bears were shot or died of other reasons; 8 less than in the previous hunting year. Six were felled as nuisance and one was killed in traffic. In addition, three bears out of a quota of 19 were shot under licence.

More wolves killed

A total of 13 wolves were shot or died of other causes. Five were shot as nuisance, four were shot under licence, three were killed by traffic and one was felled in self-defence.

Quota hunting

Quota hunting on lynx takes place in February and March. The county governor administers the quota hunting of lynx. Anyone who meets the requirements can hunt lynx in areas where quota hunting is in effect.

Shot under licence

The authorities give licences to shoot large carnivores in cases when it is necessary to reduce the growth of a carnivore stock to avoid them causing damage and loss of livestock.

Shot as nuisance

The authorities give permission to shoot single animals of large carnivores killing or causing damage to livestock or domesticated reindeer.
