Fewer wild reindeer felled
Following two years of increasing yield, there was a decline in the number of wild reindeer felled this autumn. 4 670 out of a felling quota of 9 300 were shot. The yield decreased by 400 animals from the previous year.
Most of the yield reduction is due to reduced felling on the Hardangervidda plateau. In addition, there was no hunting in four wild reindeer areas. In 2006, the quota was 11 000 animals, and 5 100 were felled.
Reduced felling on Hardangervidda
The Hardangervidda plateau is Norway's largest wild reindeer area. In the last part of the 1990s, 3 000-4 000 wild reindeer were felled in this area every year. In 2007, barely 700 animals were felled, a decrease of 340 animals from the previous year. The felling quota decreased from 3 520 in 2006 to 1 830 in 2007. Three years ago the wild reindeer in the Hardangervidda area were preserved except for one hunting ground. The preservation took place due to reduced stock of wild reindeer. In the two previous years, 860 and 1 038 animals were felled respectively.
Highest felling in Rondane
Most wild reindeer were felled in Rondane wild reindeer area. A total of 887 animals were shot this autumn, 40 more than in the previous year. Forelhogna had the highest yield increase. The number of felled animals rose from 272 last year to 652 this year.
More reindeer hunters
Statistics on wild reindeer hunters in 2007 are published next year. Figures show that 8 100 hunters hunted wild reindeer in the autumn of 2006, almost the same number as the year before.
