Fewer wild reindeer shot
In total, about 6 100 wild reindeer were shot during the hunting season in 2016; which is about 400 animals fewer than the season before.

A total of 1 700 calves, 800 of which were aged 1.5 years, 1 400 older males and 2 200 older females were shot. The total number of permissions to shoot increased by 4 600 compared with 2015, while the harvest percentage declined by 7 percentage points and ended at 24.
Increased yield on Hardangervidda
The Hardangervidda plateau is Norway's largest wild reindeer area. In the autumn of 2016, about 1 800 animals were shot, which is an increase of almost 170 from the previous hunting season.
The permissions to shoot increased from about 8 000 animals in 2015 to 15 000 in 2016. The reason for this increase was that each female/yearling permission included one calf.
Behind Hardangervidda, the wild reindeer area Reinheimen-Breheimen had the largest yield, and 670 animals were shot in the autumn of 2016.
More reindeer hunters
Statistics on wild reindeer hunters in 2016 will be published next year. However, 11 000 hunters hunted wild reindeer in the autumn of 2015, an increase of 400 from the year before.
