Number of active hunters, by county of residence. 2003/04

A total of 98 000 hunters participated in small game hunting (beaver hunting included) in 2003/04. 67 per cent of all active hunters took part in small game hunting. Most small game hunters lived in Akershus county (9 500 hunters), while Sør-Trøndelag and Nordland counties had respectively 8 900 and 7 800 small game hunters.

Approximately 80 per cent of the hunters from Oslo and Akershus county and the three northern most counties hunted for small game. The proportion of small game hunters was lowest in Sogn og Fjordane county with only 40 per cent participated.

Hunting on cervids

A total of 87 000 people hunted cervids in 2003/04. Cervids includes moose, roe deer, red deer and wild reindeer. This amounts to 59 per cent of all active hunters. A total of 8 100 cervid hunters lived in Hedmark county.

Moose hunting

Among the cervids species, moose is the most common game to be hunted. A total of 58 000 people hunted moose during the autumn 2003. Hedmark county is still the largest moose county, measured both by the total number of hunting licenses and the total number of animals felled. ( See moose hunting ). Most moose hunters lived in Hedmark - 7 000 persons.

More red deer hunters

Since the beginning of the 1990s the felling quota on red deer has increased considerably ( See red deer hunting ). A total of 29 900 hunters took part inn red deer hunting in the autumn 2003.

Roe deer

The second most frequent type of hunting was roe deer hunting which engaged 37 500 hunters, and 14 900 had yield from the hunt. ( See roe deer hunting )

Less wild reindeer hunters

Wild reindeer is the species that fewest people are allowed to hunt because the hunting rights are individual ( See wild reindeer hunting ). A total of 7 300 hunters hunted on a quota of 8 600 wild reindeer during the autumn 2003. This is 2 400 less than the year before. The decrease in number of wild reindeer hunters is partly due to lower quotas on Hardangervidda than the year before and partly due to a decision from many of the landowners here not to allow hunting this year.
