Most small game hunters

66 per cent of all active hunters participated in small game hunting (beaver hunting included) in 2002/03. Most of them lived in Akershus county - 9 200 persons.

Approximately 80 per cent of the hunters from Oslo county and the three northern counties hunted small game. The number was lowest in Sogn og Fjordane county where only 39 per cent participated.

Hunting cervids

Ratio on small game hunting and hunting on cervide, by county of residence. 1971/72 - 2002/03

60 per cent of all active hunters hunted cervids. Cervids includes moose, roe deer, red deer and wild reindeer. A total of 8 100 cervid hunters lived in Hedmark county.

The portion of cervids hunters was highest in Sogn og Fjordane and Aust-Agder counties where 85 per cent participated in cervid hunting and 34 and 28 per cent of the hunters came from Troms and Finnmark Counties.

Moose hunting

Among the cervids species, moose is the most common game to be hunted. A total of 56 600 hunters hunted moose in the autumn 2002. Hedmark is still the largest moose county, measured both by the total number of hunting licenses and the total number of animals felled. Most moose hunters lived in Hedmark - 6 900 persons. ( See moose hunting )

Roe deer

The second most frequent type of hunting was roe deer hunting which engaged 36 900 hunters, and 15 200 had yield from the hunt. ( See roe deer hunting ). In Østfold county a total of 4 200 roe deer were shot.

Red deer

Since the beginning of the 1990s the felling quota on red deer has increased considerably ( See red deer hunting ). A total of 28 600 hunters took part inn red deer hunting in the autumn 2002. Most red deer hunters lives in the three largest reed deer counties Møre og Romsdal, Sogn og Fjordane and Hordaland.

Less wild reindeer hunters

Wild reindeer is the species that fewest persons are allowed to hunt because the hunting rights are individual ( See wild reindeer hunting ). A total of 9 600 hunters hunted on a quota of 11 350 wild reindeer during the autumn 2002 - 650 less than the year before. A reduced felling quota explains why the number of wild reindeer hunters has decreased.
