Deer hunt record for the 12th year in a row

Another yield record has been set during the deer hunt. Every year since 1991 new deer hunt records have been set, and during the autumn of 2002 a total of 24 500 animals were felled. This is about 950 more animals than the year before, and 13 500 more than in 1991.

Except from Aust- and Vest-Agder, the yield has increased in all counties where deer hunting is permitted. As much as 69 per cent of the increase on country level came from the counties of Rogaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal.

The felling rate shows how many animals that were shot as a percentage of the number of licenses issued. For the country as a whole, the felling rate was 67 per cent. In total, 36 628 licenses were issued. In average, the felling percentage has been around 66 the last years. By comparison, 85 per cent of the quota was felled under the moose hunt.

A total of 5 756 calves, 7 334 animals 1 ½ years old and 11 443 older animals were felled. The distribution by sex was 55 per cent males and 45 per cent females.

Sogn og Fjordane the biggest deer county

Measured by total number of hunting licenses and total number of felled animals, Sogn og Fjordane is still the largest red deer county. Nearly 1/3 of all red deer shot inn 2002 were felled in Sogn og Fjordane. Totally, 11 630 permissions were issued, and 8 374 animals were felled.

Sogn og Fjordane county also gets the highest score if we measure by dividing the number of deer felled by the size of the hunting area. In average, 11.1 animals were shot per 10 squarekilometres of qualifying hunting area in 2002. In Møre og Romsdal and in Hordaland 8.7 animals were shot per 10 squarekilometres of hunting area.

Most animals felled in Kvinnherad

Measured by number of animals felled, Kvinnherad is still the biggest red deer municipality. Of a quota of 1 012 animals, 792 were shot. In Ørsta and Flora 655 and 620 animals respectively were felled.

A total of 27 500 hunters took part in red deer hunting in the autumn 2001. See the statistics on hunters for more details.
