Stable fish catch and landed value

Preliminary figures show that Norwegian vessels delivered nearly 1.7 million tonnes of fish in the first six months 2002. Including crustaceans and molluscs, the landed value amounted to NOK 6.1 billion. This is about the same as the preliminary figures for the first six months in 2001.

Catch quantity, by fish species. 2002*. Per cent

The cod catch increased from 160 800 tonnes to 178 800 tonnes. The value of the catch amounted to NOK 2.3 billion.

This corresponds to 11 per cent of the total catch and 37 per cent of the landed value.

Cod and haddock figures include fishing by Norwegian vessels on Russian quotas.

The herring catch came to 240 000 tonnes, worth NOK 1.1 billion. Compared with the corresponding period 2001 the catch decreased 5 per cent in quantity and increased 29 per cent in landed value.

55 per cent of the total catch was made into meal, oil and animal food. Frozen fish accounted for 27 per cent.

Catch value, by fish species. 2002*. Per cent

The catch of Norway pout, blue whiting and sandeel was 597 000 tonnes, worth NOK 586 million. These species account for 36 per cent of the total catch quantity, but only 10 per cent of the catch value. Most of the catch is used to manufacture meal, oil and animal food.
