Stable fish catch, increase in landed value

Preliminary figures show that Norwegian vessels delivered 1. 6 million tons of fish in the first six months in 2001, about the same as the preliminary figures for the first six months in 2000. Including crustaceans and molluscs, the landed value amounted to NOK 5.7 billion, an increase of 15 per cent from the same period in 2000.

The herring catch came to 251 000 tons worth NOK 813 million. Compared with the same period the year before this is 17 per cent decrease in quantity and 79 per cent increase in landed value.

The cod catch fell from 162 400 tons to 160 700 tons. The value of the catch was NOK 2.2 billion.

This corresponds to 10 per cent of the total catch and 38 per cent of the landed value.

Cod and haddock figures include fishing by Norwegian vessels on Russian quotas.

52 per cent of the total catch was made into meal, oil and animal food. Frozen fish accounted for 31 per cent.

The catch of Norway pout, blue whiting and sandeel was 558 000 tons worth NOK 371 million. These species account for 35 per cent of the total catch quantity but only 6 per cent of the catch value. Most of the catch is used to manufacture meal, oil and animal food.
