Value of catch almost NOK 16 billion

Norwegian vessels delivered 2.3 million tonnes of fish, crustaceans and molluscs in 2011, down 15 per cent compared with 2010. The landed value amounted to NOK 15.9 billion, up 19 per cent from 2010.

Seventy-nine per cent of the catch was used for consumption, while 21 per cent was used for the production of meal, oil, animal feed etc.

Quantity and value of catch. 2001-2011*

Less landed herring, increase in value

The catch of herring in 2011 was 31 per cent lower than the year before, and amounted to 28 per cent of the total catch. The landed value of the herring increased by 22 per cent, corresponding to 21 per cent of the total landed value in 2011.

Cod fishing most important

The cod catch came to 341 000 tonnes, with a value of NOK 3.9 billion. This accounted for 15 per cent of the total catch quantity and 24 per cent of the total catch value. Measured by the value of landed catch, cod fishing was the most important for fisheries.

Steep decline of blue whiting

A low level of the spawning stock biomass of blue whiting resulted in much lower quotas in 2011. Norway’s total quota was 22 033 tonnes. The blue whiting catch came to 21 000 tonnes in 2011; a decrease of 89 per cent compared with the year before. The landed value decreased by 82 per cent, to NOK 66 million.

A small amount of the landed fish has not yet been sold. Therefore, the value of the total catch is expected to increase slightly as these sales are registered.

Foreign landings amounted to NOK 2.4 billion

Foreign vessels delivered 281 000 tonnes of fish and crustaceans in Norway in 2011. The total value of the foreign landings was NOK 2.4 billion.

The statistics are based on data from the Directorate of Fisheries as per 18 January. For more information is available on the Directorate of Fisheries’ website.

Catch value/landed value

Catch value/landed value is defined as the amount paid to the fishermen for the catch. This includes freight and price subsidies and production tax, but not tax to the sales co-operatives. Value added tax is not included.
