Increase of salmon fishing in rivers

A total of 5801 tonnes of salmon, sea trout and migratory char were caught in 2003 - an increase of 621 tonnes compared with 2002.

A division of the catch shows 4741 tonnes of salmon and 1061 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2002 the increase came to 12 per cent for both salmon and the latter two1.

The average weight of salmon was 3.3 kilos in 2003, against 3.6 kilos in 2002. 37 per cent of the salmon weighed less than 3 kilos, 34 per cent between 3 and 7 kilos and 29 per cent above 7 kilos. The corresponding percentage of distribution for 2002 was 30, 38 and 32 respectively.

Tana and its tributaries were still the most important river system in 2003, with an estimated catch of 86 tonnes. This is 18 tonnes less than the year before. Next were Gaula, Orkla, Namsen og Numedalslågen.
