Increase in river catch of salmon

The total river catch of salmon, sea trout and migratory char amounted to 480 tonnes in 2008. This is 68 tonnes or 16 per cent, more than in 2007.

The total catch consisted of 424 tonnes of salmon and 56 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2007, the increase was 25 per cent for salmon, while the two other species decreased by 25 per cent.

The average weight of salmon caught was 3.8 kilos in 2008, against 3.5 kilos in 2007. 25 per cent of the salmon weighed less than 3 kilos, 36 per cent between 3 and 7 kilos and 39 per cent above 7 kilos. The corresponding percentage distribution for 2007 was 25, 42 and 33 respectively.

Tana and its tributaries was the most important river system in 2008, with a catch of 55.4 tonnes. This is 7.3 tonnes more than in 2007. Next in line were Gaula, Altaelva, Namsenvassdraget and Orkla.
