Slight decrease in river catch of salmon

According to preliminary figures, the total river catch of salmon, sea trout and migratory char amounted to 498 tonnes in 2006, a decrease of about 20 tonnes compared with 2005, but 90 tonnes more compared with 2004.

The total catch consisted of 420 tonnes of salmon and 78 tonnes of sea trout and migratory char. Compared with 2005, the decrease was 1 per cent for salmon and 18 per cent for the two other species.

The average weight of salmon caught was 3.0 kilos in 2006, against 2.9 kilos in 2005. 38 per cent of the salmon weighed less than 3 kilos, 42 per cent between 3 and 7 kilos and 20 per cent above 7 kilos. The corresponding percentage distribution for 2005 was 44, 29 and 27 respectively.

Tana and its tributaries was the most important river system in 2006, with an estimated catch of 49.6 tonnes. This is an increase of 15.8 tonnes from 2005. Next in line were Gaula, Orkla, Altaelva and Namsenvassdraget.
