Your answers are valuable
The results from this survey provide a basis for estimating resource use in research and development (R&D) in the national R&D statistics, which is a part of Norway’s international statistical commitments. Furthermore, the results are used to provide an overview of working conditions at Norwegian higher education institutions.
Compiled data is used as national reference values. It is crucial that your job category, your field of R&D and your institution are well represented in order to contribute to the knowledge base for analyses, decisions and priorities within research and higher education.
Research and experimental development (R&D) comprise creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase the stock of knowledge and to devise new applications of available knowledge.
R&D includes both basic research, applied research and development. Five criteria must be met for the activity to classify an activity as R&D. It must contain something new, be creative, have uncertainty related to the result, be systematic and be transferable and/or reproducible.
For an activity to be considered research and development, it is important that the purpose of the activity is R&D, and that it meets the five R&D criteria mentioned above.
The survey covers the academic year 2024–2025 (August 2024 to June 2025).
We ask about:
- Weekly working hours
- Proportion of working hours spent on different time-use categories. For R&D activity, the intention of the activity must be directed towards R&D
- The number of MA students and PhD candidates that you are supervising
- Supervision related to your own R&D activities
