At the end of 2008 there were almost 13 000 beds at general hospitals. In the same period, the total number of man-years was 62 900. Physician man-years represent 14 per cent of the total number, and nurses 38 per cent.

There were around 819 000 discharges after stays in general hospitals in 2008; an increase of almost 1 per cent compared to 2007. The number of outpatient consultations was nearly 3 900 000, which is a growth of 3.9 per cent, and there were almost 551 000 day cases.

5  From 2008, statistics on personnel in the specialist health service are based on data from administrative registers. Previously the data were collected from questionnaires.
